Application Context Model
Narrative of Model
Using the Application Portfolio provided, our team was able to construct an Application Context model. We believe our model clearly illustrates a high-level categorization of key applications listed in the Application Portfolio. Our design approach was similar to the one used by MIT. We first group the applications into four core sections with a high-level of abstraction. These four categories are:
1. Administration
2. Information Technology (IT)
3. Academic
4. Facilities
We then proceeded to group the applications within each of these core sections, creating slightly lower-level subcategories within each core section. Any applications that did not fit directly into a subcategory were left in the higher-level core section (Kronos, VMWare, DARS, etc.). These subcategories are as follows:
1. Administration
a. Admissions
b. Finance
c. University Communications
d. Banner
2. Information Technology (IT)
a. Data Storage
b. Network Connectivity
c. Websites and Web Services
d. Authentication
e. Groupware
3. Academic
a. Learning Management Systems
b. Academic Communications
4. Facilities
a. Housing and Dining
In addition, we color-coded each of the sections in order to add to the visual representation of the model: blue represents Administrative applications, red represents Information Technology applications, green represents Academic applications, and yellow represents Facility-related applications. We believe that this coloring will help the model express correlation between the applications in this model and the applications in the Application Integration Model as well.
